"Our Beginnings" was originally created by Thompson as a logo for the 1997 North American Indigenous Games. The image has been generously donated by the artist to a new program to be used as its visual identity. The program, the first of its kind in Canada, is committed to teaching and research that respects both western and indigenous traditions and forms of knowledge. On the one hand, the written word is still indispensable as a reference point or a compass, enabling us to get our bearings in the galaxy of visual images. On the other hand, written knowledge is as vital as ever to the self-realization of every individual, every social group and every nation. Mastery of the written word is still a condition of access to knowledge and the full exercise of citizenship. Within the Protein Crystal Growth facility, pure protein solution is exposed to a substrate, which draws the liquid out of the protein solution, leaving crystallized proteins behind. The precise structure of the proteins may be determined by diffracting X-rays off the crystal to create a visual image of the molecular structure of the protein.
