Prenons l'exemple d'une zone périurbaine où se côtoient des espaces bâtis, des champs labourés, des espaces à dominante végétale. Un champs labouré (minéral), une forêt (végétal), auront une texture relativement homogène, c'est-à-dire des valeurs de réponses de pixels proches.
