VOICE COMMUNICATE [19 fiches]

Fiche 1 2024-03-25

Anglais

Subject field(s)
  • Hearing
  • The Ear
DEF

A person who has severe to profound hearing loss, with little or no residual hearing.

OBS

The term "deaf" may be used on its own as a collective noun ("the deaf") to form compound words such as "school for the deaf" and "class for the deaf."

OBS

deaf-mute person; deaf mute person :[These] terms associate deafness with the inability to communicate in a spoken language. A deaf person may choose not to use their voice; this does not make them mute.

OBS

deaf person: Not to be confused with the term "Deaf person," where "deaf" is written with an uppercase "D." This term refers to a person with hearing loss who uses a signed language as their primary language, identifies with the Deaf culture and is active in the Deaf community.

Domaine(s)

DEF

Social cues are the ways in which we communicate without using words. These cues involve aspects such as facial expressions, how we move our bodies, tone of voice, our physical proximity to others, and any other way we express ourselves outside of verbal communication. While social cues tend to be similar among most people, they can be affected by many things, including a person's personality, culture, and comfort levels.

Subject field(s)
  • Hearing
  • Sociology
DEF

A person whose hearing loss ranges from mild to profound and whose usual means of communication is speech.

OBS

[Hard of hearing persons] often use their voice to communicate and might have residual hearing that can be supplemented with technical aids.

OBS

The term ["hard of hearing"] is most commonly written without any hyphens, even when it appears in front of a noun: "a hard of hearing person."

OBS

hearing impaired; hearing impaired person: [These terms are] not acceptable in referring to people with a hearing loss. "Hearing impairment" is a medical condition; it is not a collective noun for people who have varying degrees of hearing loss. It also fails to recognize the differences between the Deaf and the hard of hearing communities.
