The Cordilleran orogen in Canada features a collage of fragmented, Mesozoic and older, largely volcanic, exotic terranes.... The exotic terranes were amalgamated into two composite superterranes that were successively accreted to ancestral North America during the Mesozoic. Dickinson(1973) applied the term "arc-trench gap" to the zone between the trench slope break and the volcanic axis, a region that includes the frontal arc and part of the forearc. The arc-trench region is characterized by very low heat flow across the continental margin and sharply higher values near the volcanic arc. This pattern is characteristic of many subduction zones, indicating that the low heat flow may be the result of the downgoing slab acting as a thermal sink, both because it is comparatively cold and because of endothermic phase changes in the descending oceanic material.
