Strictly speaking there is an important distinction to be made between a "touch shot" and a "finesse shot", terms quite often used synonymously. A "touch shot" requires a delicate "touch" of the hands to execute shots such as a "drop volley" or a "lob volley", whereas a "finesse shot" is simply any shot that has required much agility and nimbleness on the part of the player, e. g. backhand topspin lob. A generic term used to describe any soft, relatively slow and delicate shot hit with very little pace or depth low over the net and usually at an acute angle, but also at the feet of an opponent if he is inside the service court area. Used especially to neutralize the effectiveness of volleying attacks.

OBS

Although a "chip shot" is usually shallow, forcing an opponent to move quickly forward to hit up on a low ball right into the waiting hands of the attacker, the term is not entirely synonymous with "dink". The latter is more generic in that it may refer to any shallow shot hit with much or very little spin. Moreover, it usually implies a certain degree of ruse and deception with the use of body language unlike the neutrality of the term "chip". "Dinker" is the slang term often heard on the courts.

A type of topspin serve hit with a combination of topspin and sidespin. The ball not only takes a high bounce, it also flies in a direction opposite of what one would normally expect it to.

An exageration of the topspin serve turns the service into a kick service or "American twist". A right-hander’s American twist serve puts left-to-right spin on the ball. Such a serve can present difficulties for the receiver, particularly on grass where the bounce could be tricky.

The "kick serve" is also called the "kicker". It became known as the "american twist" or "american twist serve" in the first Davis Cup match in 1900 when the finalists, Holcombe Ward, a Harvard man, and his college friend, Dwight Davis, used the stroke they had developed to beat their English opponents.

There is a slight difference between "poaching" and "interception". The first term implies a resolve to move over to one’s partner’s side of the court, whether one is expecting to make contact with the ball or not. The second term implies less doubt as to whether the ball will come or not. It will come and the player will meet the ball to put it away. In general, the French term "interception" conveys both English meanings. Related terms: cross, switch, to cut to the middle, to pick off the return of service.
