The final tuning component of the oscillator, C2 [capacitor] sets the voltage tuning gain of the oscillator. This capacitor should keep the coupling as light as possible while maintaining the required frequency tuning range of the VCO [voltage controlled oscillator] so that the varactor's phase noise contribution is reduced to a minimum. If the coupling is too light, the oscillator may not start under certain conditions.

Colloidal Propulsion. Colloidal thrusters were developed extensively in the seventies but then work was stopped.... a number of problems prevented them from becoming a viable technology. In order to achieve useable thrusts(in the mN range) the researchers had to try and make large number arrays of the needle emitters. They found reproducible and consistent manufacturing to be difficult to achieve and as well as this, the size of the thrusters soon became inattractive. Another disadvantage was the extremely high voltage needed to achieve the perfomance, voltages well in excess of 10kV were required for operation and this was neither easy or desirable from a spacecraft power perspective.

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels.

Integrated Cantilever Beam Tunneling Sensor. Our researchers have exploited the extremely sensitive quantum tunneling effect between metals to design MEMS sensors that can sense a force applied to a silicon-based, surface micromachined structure with extraordinary sensitivity and six orders of magnitude of dynamic range. The force is applied to a micromachined cantilever(one electrode) and is sensed as a result of a tunneling current produced between the cantilever and a tunneling tip(the other electrode). The sensor is operated in a force rebalance mode such that the cantilever and tip do not actually move with respect to each other but are held in a servo-locked state with the voltage required to maintain the servo-lock proportional to the force being sensed by the cantilever.

Several different types of sensor devices have been designed, fabricated and demonstrated using this concept. These include extremely high dynamic range accelerometers, and high performance microgyroscopes that show the prospect of enabling very compact, inexpensive, precision inertial navigation and inertial measurement systems.

The Rohde & Schwarz active rod antenna HE010 allows a sensitivity which is near the theoretical maximum even for small atmospheric-noise figures. The antenna, only 1 m in length, operates in the frequency range 10 KHz to 80 MHz, is largely immune to noise signals, has two isolated outputs and is therefore able to feed two receiving paths in wideband operation without reducing the sensitivity. The study mechanical construction of glassfibre-reinforced polyester and the wide voltage range from 18 to 35 V make the rod antenna particularly suitable for mobile use.
