This type of device has been used to detect rotational speed, torque, proximity and other parameters. When in a reflective configuration, the transducer element has consisted of a thin Faraday film between a polarizer and a mirror. ... the scanning thermal microscope... The microscope's probe may be the world's tiniest thermometer : it can measure surface-temperature variations of a ten-thousandth of a degree on a scale of tens of nanometers. The probe consists of a tungsten wire ending in a point perhaps 30 nanometers across. The wire is coated with a second metal, nickel, which is separated from the tungsten by a layer of insulator everywhere except at the tip of the probe. This value is used to convert the voltage output from the gyro into an angular rate. System imperfections can cause small variations in the scale factor. These variations appear as a factor at the output of the gyro. Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point.
