The Friends's School Programs aim to foster an interest in art and the National Gallery. The English language Looking at Pictures program began in 1968 followed in 1985 by the French-language Vive les arts! These parallel programs respond to invitations from area elementary schools to show reproductions of art to students in their classrooms. These volunteers driven programs are supported enthusiastically by the region's School Boards. During the 1995-1996 school year, 36, 000 students in 176 schools participated in our Looking at Pictures and Vive les arts! programmes.

The first Ontario Breeding Bird Atlas was carried out from 1981-1985, and involved the efforts of over 1, 300 volunteers who collectively carried out more than 120, 000 hours of field work. This resulted in a data base of over 400, 000 bird-locality records, giving unprecedented information on the breeding distribution of birds in Ontario. These results were summarized in the 1987 publication Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ontario, edited by M. D. Cadman, P. F. J. Eagles, and F. M. Helleiner, which was jointly produced by the Federation of Ontario Naturalists and Long Point Bird Observatory.
