An upturned wingtip or added auxiliary aerofoil(s) above and/or below tip to increase efficiency of wing in cruise, usually by reducing tip vortex and thus recovering energy lost therein and improving circulation and lift of outer portion of wing.

The tipsails are an extension of NASA [National Aeronautics and Space Administration] technology which led to the application of small winglets on many airplanes... Tipsails operate in the rotational flow field of the wing tip vortex, giving an effect similar to the sail of a boat as it moves into the wind. The force vector produced by the pressure differential between the two surfaces is directed forward, which results in a cruise drag reduction. Rudders, located at the trailing edge of the tipsails, provide directional control without requiring a special surface dedicated solely to that purpose.

A condition in which the wind’s aerodynamic lifting force is approximately equal to its aerodynamic drag, resulting in the lowest wind power capture by the blade.

CONT

Dynamic stall is a non-linear unsteady aerodynamic effect that occurs when aerofoils rapidly change the angle of attack. The rapid change can cause a strong vortex to be shed from the leading edge of the aerofoil, and travel backwards above the wing. The vortex, containing high velocity airflows, briefly increases the lift produced by the wing. As soon as it passes behind the trailing edge, however, the lift reduces dramatically, and the wing is in normal stall.

Vortex methods are used to simulate chaotic fluid flows at high Reynolds numbers, whereby the gradient of changes demand higher and higher resolution meshes. The fast vortex algorithm, as the Barnes-Hut one, treats the effect of far-away vortices as an average effect to speed up computation.

Consider the effect of rotating a right-circular cylinder(...) about its axis with a peripheral velocity(...) in a fluid otherwise at rest. The fluid in contact with the surface of the cylinder rotates with the cylinder. Fluid at greater radius is also set in motion in concentric circles with velocity diminishing as the radius increase. This type of fluid motion, in which the velocity varies inversely as the radius, is referred to as a free vortex.
