A major challenge we faced in attempting to redefine the company's performance management and review training was that its managers are very busy. They don’t want to take two weeks out of any business quarter to practice giving reviews. Since they don’t need to use these skills every day, mastering them seems of secondary importance to their daily work. Besides, if they take a training course and then wait three months before giving their first review, they’ll probably forget everything they learned anyway. This is excatly why we felt it was so important to give managers the opportunity to practice these skills in a safe, simulated environment just before giving employee reviews. MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. Those mast cells, relatives of white blood cells, are common in the surface tissues of the body, where they wait for reexposure to the antigen like mines floating in a harbor. When the antigen returns and touches two or more IgE molecules, the mast cell pours out a cocktail of at least ten chemicals. Some are enzymes that attack any nearby cells; some activate platelets; some attract other white cells to the site; some can stimulate smooth muscle(thereby causing asthma).
