A plaza for all seasons. People who live in, work in or visit Hull, Quebec, have a beautiful new public space to enjoy, thanks to a PWGSC [Public Works and Government Services Canada]-managed restoration and redesign project. The newly reopened plaza at Parc du Portage is popular among employees at lunchtime, but is also drawing strollers in the evening and bringing new life into the downtown area. The plaza is located between Phases I and II of the Government of Canada Place du Portage office complex and the provincial/municipal Maison du Citoyen building. The plaza is a few minutes’ walk from the Museum of Civilization, one of the national capital' s major visitor attractions. An underground parking garage owned by the Government of Canada is situated beneath the plaza. The restoration and redesign project had two main components--repair of the waterproof membrane of the garage roof, which had been leaking, and restoration of the plaza. Improvements to the plaza included the addition of more fountains in the pool, and the construction of a low wall around the pool providing places to sit. At night, innovative new lighting casts a shimmering reflection onto the nearby building walls. The plaza should also be a hit in winter because of a versatile design that allows the pool fountains to be dismantled and the pool to be converted into a skating rink.

Kibo's Debris Shield. The International Space Station(ISS) wall is designed to protect the ISS and its crew from space debris. A debris shield is adopted for this particular purpose. A famous astronomer, Fred Whipple, devised this shield, so it is called a Whipple Shield. The idea is to attach a layer of thin aluminum plate outside the wall. When a space debris impacts this outer plate, the kinetic energy of the space debris is converted to heat. This heat creates a hole in the outer plate. However, the debris will evaporate or disintegrate to small particles consisting of gas, liquid and solids and will no longer be able to significantly damage the wall.... a stuffed-shield is adopted on the wall of the front side of Kibo, covering an area of 150 degrees. SIR... stands for Standard Interface Rack. SIR is a system for integrating hardware. It is a technology we use to take Earth things to space. The rack contains mechanical parts, called a liner, used to slide drawers in and out, much like a file cabinet. Drawers are used to contain or repackage things and make them flight ready. For example, we can’t take computers to space in the same outer packages or cases we use on Earth because some pieces may float out or the vibration from launch would destroy them. So, we take all the computer's guts from the central processing unit(its brain) and repackage it in one of these drawers. On the rack side, the SIR also provides power and data for the drawers through cables. Power for a drawer comes from a connector in the rack, just like a wall outlet at your house. Data cables serve many purposes, but the main one is for communication. This is so drawers can "talk" to each other, the Space Station, and Earth. For the computer drawer mentioned above, parts are wired to connectors in the drawer. When you slide the drawer into the rack, it connects to cables already in the rack.

For projects using brick, make certain you have a brick trowel, brick chisel, mason's hammer, 4 ft. level, tape measure, pointing trowel, jointing tool, mason's line, wood line blocks and spirit level. Later, as you proceed, the guideline can be moved up to match each successive course of bricks. Line blocks can be used to hold line in place... When laying bricks, always start at the corners and keep the corners higher than the rest of your work. Work from the corners toward the center of your wall. Use the level frequently to check level and plumb. As the wall increases in height, move the line blocks up to the ends of your corner lead.

Oil furnaces. Indoor oil furnaces... are available in upflow, downflow, horizontal and low-boy configurations for ducted systems. They are also available as floor furnaces, wall furnaces, and free standing space heaters. Oil-fired outdoor furnaces and combination units are rare.... The ducted system, oil-fired, forced air furnaces are usually equipped with pressure-atomizing burners. The pump pressure and the orifice size of the injection nozzle regulate the firing rate of the furnace. Electric ignition is used to ignite the burners.... The combustion chamber and heat exchanger of oil-fired furnaces are normally formed as a common single chamber. It is formed from heavy gage steel into a welded assembly. The hot flue products flow through the inside of the heat exchanger into the chimney. The conditioned air flows over the outside of the heat exchanger and into the air supply plenum.

Fournaise : Ce terme est considéré comme impropre par les puristes. Selon Dagenais, dans son "Dictionnaire des difficultés de la langue française au Canada", "fournaise" serait un calque de l'anglais "furnace" et nous devrions plutôt dire "chaudière" lorsque le fluide caloporteur est l'eau ou la vapeur et "générateur d'air chaud", lorsque le fluide, est l'air. Cependant, ce terme reste d'usage fréquent au Québec, autant en langue parlée qu'en langue écrite.

Propeller fan units are generally used in free-delivery applications.... Down-blow units are employed in high-ceiling spaces and where floor and wall space limitations dictate an out-of-the-way location for the heating equipment. Down-blow units may be supplied with an adjustable diffuser to vary the air discharge pattern from a high velocity vertical jet(to achieve the maximum distance of downward throw) to a horizontal discharge of lower velocity(to prevent excessive air motion in the zone of occupancy). Revolving diffusers are also available.
