La stimulation magnétique transcrânienne consiste à appliquer une impulsion magnétique sur le cortex cérébral à travers le crâne de façon indolore au moyen d'une bobine. Conformément à la loi de Lenz-Faraday, la variation rapide du flux magnétique induit un champ électrique qui modifie l'activité des neurones situés dans le champ magnétique. Dans la réalité il faut tenir compte du phénomène de relaxation. En effet, après absorption de la radiation, le noyau a tendance à revenir à l'équilibre. On distingue deux sortes de relaxations : Relaxation spin-milieu ou spin-réseau, dite relaxation longitudinale. Ce phénomène longitudinal est provoqué par les molécules qui subissent un mouvement de rotation, de vibration, de translation et par les propriétés magnétiques des noyaux. L'énergie de translation est transférée au réseau du milieu. Relaxation spin-spin ou relaxation transversale. In the presense of an external magnetic field, the energy levels of atoms are split. This splitting is described well by the Zeeman effect if the splitting is small compared to the energy difference between the unperturbed levels, i. e., for sufficiently weak magnetic fields. This can be visualized with the help of a vector model of total angular momentum. If the magnetic field is large enough, it disrupts the coupling between the orbital and spin angular momenta, resulting in a different pattern of splitting.
