The trained search dog works a snowfield rapidly, searching for "pools" of human scent rising up through the snow pack. When the dog finds a potential scent source he will bury his head into the snow trying to locate the source. If the human smell intensifies, he begins to dig trying to get closer to the source. If the scent becomes weaker, a trained dog will start to work outwards from the area to attempt to either pinpoint an area of stronger buried source or rule the scent out as surface odor left by human searchers.... Les chiens sont indispensables dans la recherche en montagne car ils sont beaucoup plus rapides que l'homme. L'odorat du chien lui permet de retrouver les rescapés sous la neige, tant que la victime est vivante car la chaleur du corps humain facilite la diffusion des odeurs. Pour être un bon chien d'avalanche, le chien doit être très résistant physiquement et être de taille moyenne. Un chien trop grand, trop lourd, comme le saint-bernard, s'enfoncera rapidement dans la neige. Il doit aussi avoir un caractère équilibré et social. Icelandic low :... Because of its broad area and range of central pressure, it is an area where migratory lows tend to slow down and deepen. It is strongest during a Northern Hemisphere winter and early spring, centered over Iceland and southern Greenland, and is the dominate weather feature in the area. During the summer, it is weaker, less intense, and might divide into two parts, one west of Iceland, the other over the Davis Strait between Greenland and Baffin Island.
