The new French meteorological radar, ROMUALD, has been operational since October 2001 in French Guiana making it possible to gain two hours in forecasting adverse weather conditions. Radar d'observation météorologique d'utilisation aisée localement et à distance. Since 1994, Environment Canada has relied upon a text-to-voice generating system called AVIPADS(Automated Voice Information Processing and Dissemination System) to deliver its forecasts, hourly weather reports, and a host of other voice products to its own network of ATADs(Automatic Telephone Answering Devices) and weather radios, in English and French. The Canadian Lightning Detection Network(CLDN) helps meteorologists and scientists detect and monitor thunderstorms at an early stage in their development. Eighty-three sensors are set up across the country forming the Canadian portion of a North American network which is the largest of its kind in the world. The CLDN is able to detect more than 100 000 lightning flashes an hour. The Environmental Monitoring Division participates in the international marine program and specifically the systems for marine and ocean observation and data collection project. With the support of the Canadian Coast Guard/Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the division maintains a network of nine moored ODAS(Ocean Data Acquisition Systems) buoys along the coasts of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The buoys collect and transmit hourly weather and sea state data 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
