The wet-bulb globe temperature(WBGT) index was originally developed based on the weighting of three environmental parameters : dry-bulb temperature, wet-bulb temperature and black globe temperature. A shielded dry-bulb thermometer, a natural wet-bulb thermometer and a globe thermometer(a black globe heated by solar radiation) are used to capture these environmental parameters. The WBGT index was later standardized... and is now widely used as a heat stress index throughout the world, with the guidelines and permissible threshold limits in many industries, including construction and underground mining operations, being based on this measure.

The Klemheist knot (or Machard knot) is a type of friction hitch used as a part of a system to ascend or descend a climbing rope. ... A Prusik loop is wrapped round the climbing rope two or three times. The loop is then threaded through itself and carefully tightened to wrap the climbing rope neatly. In use, strain must only be taken on the hanging loop. Never grip and pull on the knot itself-a rapid descent can occur! If the knot slips when load is placed on the hanging loop, wrap the loop around the climbing rope another time or two as necessary until there is no slippage.

The knot is tied with a thin cord, usually 5 mm or 6 mm in diameter, onto the rope. The climber then attaches himself to the knot by clipping the cord onto his harness. Progress up a fixed rope is made by sliding the knot up the rope and then weighting or loading it with the climber's weight. When loaded, the Klemheist knot cinches onto the climbing rope, allowing the climber to progress upward. When the knot is unloaded, it loosens, allowing the climber to slide it up the rope.

To better approximate the range of sensitivity of the human ear to sounds of different frequencies, the A-weighted decibel scale was devised. Because the human ear is less sensitive to low-frequency sounds, the A-scale de-emphasizes these frequencies by incorporating frequency weighting of the sound signal. When the A-scale is used, the decibel levels are shown as dBA. On this scale, the range of human hearing extends from about 3 dBA to about 140 dBA. A 10-dBA increase is perceived by most people as a doubling of the sound level. The smallest change that can be heard is about 2 to 3 dBA.
