A part of the International Space Station that Japan is responsible for is an experiment module named "Kibo, "or "hope" in Japanese... Kibo will consist of a Pressurized Module, an Exposed Facility, an Experiment Logistics Module-Pressurized Section, an Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section, and a Remote Manipulator System.... The Exposed Facility is an experimental platform aimed for various tests with the instruments directly exposed to outer space. Experiments such as material tests, Earth observation, measurement of the space environment, communications tests, etc. are planned to be conducted on this facility to make use of vacuum and the weightless space environment. Being the Space Station's only laboratory in such an environment exposed to space, Japan's Kibo has already received high expectations for its performance. The Weightless Environment Training Facility(WETF)... consists of a water-filled pool with dimensions of 25 ft.(depth) x 78 ft.(length) x 33 ft.(width). The WETF is a controlled neutral buoyancy facility used to simulate the conditions of weightlessness for astronaut training. Environment Control and Life Support System(ECLSS) : The orbiter's Environmental Control and Life-Support System purifies the cabin air, adds fresh oxygen, keeps the pressure at sea level, heats and cools the air, and provides drinking and wash water. The system also includes lavatory facilities. The cabin is pressurized to sea level(14. 7 psi) with 21 percent oxygen and 79 percent nitrogen, comparable to Earth's atmosphere. The air is circulated through lithium hydroxide/charcoal canisters which remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are changed on a regular basis. Excess heat from the cabin and flight-deck electronics is collected by a circulating coolant water system and transferred to radiator panels on the payload bay doors where it is dissipated. The fuel cells produce about seven pounds of water each hour. It is stored in tanks, and excess water is dumped overboard. The lavatory unit collects and processes body waste, and also collects wash water from the personal hygiene station. BIOBOX (BBX) is a Space rated incubator. The BBX facility uses Peltier devices to heat and cool air that is circulated inside the insulated experiment container. There are three static sample containers and one centrifuge. The centrifuge spins at a specific speed to simulate one-g for reference. The static sample containers hold eight plunger boxes each.
