Several methods of welding exist. In all method, the thermoplastic material is joined by raising the temperature of the substrate to a level that melts the fabric at the interface of the two plies. Pressure applied in a controlled manner promotes the flow of one material into the other and upon cooling a weld bead is formed.

A defect triggered in the root pass of a weld in the immediate neighbourhood of the contact zone, and which spreads radially between the grains when under stress in service.

[Delayed re-heat cracking] only occurs with certain materials such as 321 type stainless steel, as it is caused by hardening of the steel due to fine precipitations of titanium carbide inside the crystalline structure. The hardening causes the plastic deformation capacity to be transferred to the periphery of the grains. For this to happen, the following conditions have to be met : a high operating temperature([higher than] 475°C for 321 steel), a geometrical discontinuity at the weld root, strain hardening at the weld root showing significant shrinkage, heavy local load, which may be due to welding stresses, a defect in the weld root(e. g. a small shrinkage crack).

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas.

Soudage en bout par résistance pure. Les pièces, chacune serrée dans une paire de mâchoires et reliée à une borne du secondaire d'un transformateur de soudage, sont amenées en contact, puis pressées l'une contre l'autre. Les extrémités s'échauffent par effet Joule. Lorsqu'elles ont atteint une température suffisante, on leur applique l'effort de refoulement nécessaire et elles se soudent par forgeage. L'effort de refoulement entraîne la formation d'un bourrelet au droit du joint. Ce procédé nécessite des surfaces propres et convenablement dressées afin que le contact se fasse sur toute la surface des pièces. En outre, il n'est pas possible de souder des pièces de section ou de résistivité différentes, du fait que l'échauffement approprié ne pourrait être atteint par les deux pièces en même temps.
