The Brandon Humane Society has been in operation since 1946 when it was founded by Eleanor Kidd. She originally housed the shelter in her garage on 13th Street, then in an abandoned stable near Empress Bay, and later in an old barn near the riverbank where Eleanor Kidd Gardens are now located. In 1997, the shelter moved to its new premises at 2200 17th Street East. These days, our residents-both cats and dogs-live in a comfortable building with heat and air conditioning, two large exercise yards, an enclosed cat patio, and enough kennels for 20 cats and 13 dogs. When our kennels are full, our dedicated volunteers foster animals in their own homes. Since this is a no-kill shelter, the atmosphere is very positive... our animals are loved and well cared for as they wait to be adopted. We invite you to come visit us and see for yourself! The Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science(CALAS/ACSAL) is composed of a multidisciplinary group of people and institutions concerned with the care and use of laboratory animals in research, teaching and testing. From coast to coast, membership includes veterinarians, physicians, researchers, administrators, technicians and many others. Founded in 1962, the Canadian Association for Laboratory Animal Science recognizes the laboratory animal as a partner in improving the quality of life for both humans and animals. The Association is dedicated to the elimination of both the inhumane and unnecessary use of animals in research and to the improvement of their standard care. We have seen a number of name changes over the last 60 years as the words Blue Cross were becoming synonymous worldwide with quality health care coverage. We were founded as the Maritime Hospital Service Association in 1943 and became known as the Maritime Blue Cross-Blue Shield Association in 1954. We became Blue Cross of Atlantic Canada in 1986 and, when joined with Maritime Medical Care in 1999, the trade name Atlantic Blue Cross Care was adopted. Our expansion into the Quebec and Ontario markets led to the need for a new name that would encompass all three regions. We created the name "Medavie" because it decribes our business and works well in both our English and French markets. Medavie is derived from the English and French words for "medical" and "to life". The National Forestry Database Program was founded in 1990 by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers to establish a comprehensive national forestry database, develop a public information program, and provide forestry information to the federal, provincial, and territorial policy processes. It records the level of forestry activity in any given period, as well as changes in the forest and forest management activities. The Canadian Forest Service developed and maintains the National Forestry Database.
