The scratcher is a simple device, consisting of a band of steel that fits around a joint of casing, and stiff wire fingers or cable loops sticking out in all directions around the band(360-degree coverage). This movement may be reciprocal motion in and out of the wellbore, rotary motion, or both. In general, the more motion, the better the cement job will be.

A hydraulic fracture is formed by pumping the fracturing fluid into the wellbore at a rate sufficient to increase the pressure downhole to a value in excess of the fracture gradient of the formation rock. The pressure causes the formation to crack, allowing the fracturing fluid to enter and extend the crack farther into the formation. To keep this fracture open after the injection stops, a solid proppant, commonly a sieved round sand, is added to the fracture fluid. The propped hydraulic fracture then becomes a high permeability conduit through which the formation fluids can flow to the well.

Cette technique, à l'inverse de celle à injection cyclique, permet d'atteindre de façon progressive un taux de récupération élevé. Parmi ces technologies, on pourra distinguer celle de l'entraînement à la vapeur par zone annulaire chauffée («Heated Annulus Steam Drive») et celle de drainage gravitaire renforcé par la vapeur («Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage»). La deuxième (SAGD) commence à faire ses preuves aujourd'hui. Elle permet, par l'utilisation de puits horizontaux multidrains, d'améliorer considérablement la productivité et le taux de récupération des huiles en place, tout en minimisant l'utilisation de vapeur.

Some feel that merely the use of permanent downhole gauges(PDGs) that monitor and collect wellbore and/or reservoir data, constitutes an IW. Then there are others who believe that use of simple hydraulic-controlled, remote-operated, downhole-flow-control devices with only on/off position control but no downhole monitoring, should be considered an IW. A definition accepted.... among others, is that an IW installation is one that includes all of the following capabilities : Monitoring : The ability to monitor wellbore and/or reservoir characteristics in real time; Optimization : Analyze the data from monitoring, and pro-actively adjust flow regimes from multiple zones or laterals; Flow control : Utilization of remotely operated downhole-flow-control devices... for adjustment of flow regimes.

New downhole technology to better monitor and control production without intervention was seen as a solution to maximize the potential of aging reservoirs. A condition in which the drill stem becomes stuck against the wall of the wellbore due to the fact that part of the drill stem(usually the drill collars) has become embedded in the filter cake. The conditions essential for sticking to occur are a permeable formation and a pressure differential across a nearly impermeable filter cake and drill stem.

Collage (par pression différentielle (Differential Pressure sticking). Le collage ne peut se produire que lorsque le train de sonde est immobile. Dans un puits même faiblement incliné, les masses-tiges reposent sur les parois du puits et exercent une pression de contact non négligeable. Les masses-tiges s'enfoncent dans le cake augmentant la compacité, la surface de contact et annulent l'effet de filtration. La pression de boue qui s'exerçait auparavant tout autour de la masse-tige ne s'exerce plus que d'un seul côté et applique le train de sonde contre la paroi du puits et ceci d'autant plus fortement que la pression hydrostatique de la colonne de boue dépasse la pression de la couche : c'est le collage.
