Active steering gives drivers more precise handling and tracking : this ensures that their automobiles are more mobile and agile even on twisting roads. A planetary gear is integrated with the steering column; depending on the situation, the feature varies the angle of steering determined by the user at the wheel(superimposed steering). It increases the steering angle at lower and mid-range speeds; by contrast, at higher speeds(e. g. on motorways), the steering angle is reduced. To steer the aircraft on the ground, the pilot in the left seat uses the nose-gear steering wheel on the console to the pilot's left. During take-off and landing, directional control of the aircraft is maintained solely by the rudder. The aircraft's ground steering system comprises several components, including the nose-gear steering wheel, a system of cables and pulleys, and a steering control valve fitted to a nose-wheel steering cylinder, which is attached to the nose-wheel strut. The cable and pulley system links the steering wheel to the control valve. When the pilot turns the steering wheel to the left or right, tension is applied to the cables connected to the pulley on the steering control valve. This action determines the direction and the deflection rate of the nose wheel by allowing hydraulic fluid to enter one side or the other side of the nose-wheel steering cylinder; the steering cylinder then deflects the nose wheel through a system of gears.

The distance between a bicycle’s bottom bracket and the ground.

Generally bikes with a short wheelbase, steep angles, and high bottom brackets are designed for manoeuvrability and sprinting; those with a longer wheelbase and shallow angles are designed for touring and easy riding. Angles today run from about 70° to 74°, wheel bases from 38" to 42", and bottom bracket heights from 10½" to 11". Steep angles apparently give better steering, short wheelbases give both a sharper turn for a given front-wheel angle and easier acceleration when sprinting. High bottom brackets enable you to take a turn at maximum speed and keep on pedaling without scraping the inside pedal on the ground.
