Cadelle feed on many food materials: cereal grain and its products, oilseeds, cacao, spices, etc. Their presence is indicative of old, rotten grain around storage areas and poor sanitary conditions.

OBS

Cadelles are one of the largest insects to infest grain. They are shiny black in colour, about 8 to 9 millimetres in length, and easily recognized by their large mandibles with which they can gnaw through sacking and even wood. The larva is also easy to recognize, with its black head and two black prongs on the last segment. The larva also has dark spots on top of the dorsal section. The cadelle has one of the longest life cycles of the beetles. The females lay about 900 eggs. At 28 degrees C and a relative humidity of 70 to 80%, it takes about 80 days from egg to adult. When the average temperature drops to 23 degrees C, the larval stage lasts 13 months. Under colder conditions the life cycle may take three years.

La présence de cet insecte signifie généralement qu'il y a du vieux grain pourri autour des installations d'entreposage et que les conditions sanitaires laissent à désirer.

La cadelle est un des plus gros insectes à infester le grain. De couleur noirjais, brillant, l'adulte mesure de 8 à 9 mm de longueur. On le reconnaît facilement à ses puissantes mandibules qui lui permettent de ronger la toile à sac et même le bois. La larve est également facilement identifiable, du fait de sa tête noire, des deux urogomphes qui terminent son dernier segment abdominal et des taches foncées sur la surface dorsale de son thorax. Le cycle évolutif de la cadelle est parmi les plus longs, chez les coléoptères. La femelle pond environ neuf cents œufs. À 28 degrés C et à une humidité relative variant entre 70 % et 80 %, l'évolution de la cadelle demande environ quatre-vingt jours. Si la température est de 23 degrés C, l'insecte passera treize mois sous la forme larvaire, et, à des températures plus basses, l'évolution peut exiger trois ans.

A point or area ("streak") of relative maximum wind speeds within a jet stream [or within the jet stream core].

The jet stream is a fragmented global wind flow that encircles the mid-latitudes in a wavelike pattern. Embedded within this global wind belt are jet streaks. A jet streak is a segment of the jet stream that has relatively high velocity winds.... Jet streaks are caused by a large low-level temperature gradient, thus they are more intense in the cool season when the differential in temperature between the polar regions and tropical regions is largest. Jet streaks are analyzed near the 300-mb level.

An osteochondral bar is a degenerative overgrowth of tissue. When the spine has abnormal pressure of movement of a vertebral segment, the disc, joint, and vertebra will start to degenerate. The disc can either lose height and water content virtually drying up, or bulge outward from its normal position. This truss segment, called "S5, "is a mirror image of the P5 truss segment that arrived for processing at Kennedy Space Center in July 2001. The S5 truss segment is a 10-1/2-by-15-foot aluminum structure that will weigh 3, 900 pounds when fully processed... Items to be attached to the S5 truss include handholds to be used by spacewalking astronauts, a strut assembly, multi-layer thermal blankets, and the installation of the PVRGF.

The P5 and S5 segments are merely spacers that will provide enough room for the solar arrays to track the sun and not interfere with the other equipment, for example, the waste-heat radiators and antennas. The waste-heat radiators attached to segments S1 and P1 also must be clear of array movement.

The assembly sequence of the trusses on the International Space Station does not usually correspond to the number assigned to each segment of the struss structure. Trusses are numbered as follows: P1, P3, P4, P5, P6 (port side) and S1, S3, S4, S5, S6 (starboard side). In this case, the P5 truss is referred to as the third port truss segment.
