A gender-based analysis(GBA) is a tool to both understand the local context and to support gender equality. A GBA examines the relationships between men and women, girls and boys, their access to resources, their activities, and the constraints they face relative to each other in a particular context. It identifies the varied roles played by women and men, girls and boys in the household, community, workplace, political processes and economy. These different roles often result in women having less access to and control over resources, and less participation and influence in decision-making processes. A GBA also considers how other intersecting identity factors such as race, ethnicity, LGBTQ2I [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, two-spirit, intersex], legal status, ability, language, religion, socio-economic status, and education, affect individual and group experiences, including among women and among men. Gender equality is not exclusively about women's or girls’ issues and is not only about working with or for women and girls. Research that takes the gender dimension into account is found in most scientific disciplines. For instance, a legal research project may investigate how gender-neutral legal rules affect women and men differently. An example of this is the effect of retirement pension rules. In many countries the rules are universal and gender neutral, and pensions are based on previous income. In practice, however, this theoretically gender‑neutral rule may have different outcomes for women and men. Women who have worked part-time or stayed at home to take care of children receive much lower pensions than men(and women) who have worked full-time. The influence of the Aboriginal struggle for self-determination is a critical environmental factor for the assessment of Aboriginal federally sentenced women. For example, the recent founding of the Aboriginal Women's Caucus, with its mandate to speak on behalf of Aboriginal women in conflict with the law, can be seen as a structural articulation of the link made by Aboriginal women between self-determination and corrections. The conclusion is inescapable that if women generally are disadvantaged by social stereotypes and economic disparities, Aboriginal women suffer discrimination within discrimination through the addition of racial stereotypes.
