"Women in Black" was inspired by earlier movements of women who demonstrated on the streets, making a public space for women to be heard-particularly Black Sash, in South Africa, and the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo, seeking the "disappeared" in the political repression in Argentina. In August 1997, in Lima, Peru, the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development co-hosted a democratic development forum, "Constructing a Culture of Peace in Peru". In each of the Mohawk communities approximately fifty-percent of the population resorts to their traditional form of government through the Hotinonsonni. They govern themselves through the "Kaianerekowa" which, translated into English, means "The Great Law of Peace". The Kaianerekowa defines the constitutional responsibilities of the Hotinonsonni; all their people, women as well as men, are represented and have control of their government.
