Purfling is a thin, double strip of wood that is inlaid into the edge of the top and back of the instrument. This may appear to be ornamental but, in fact, it serves two purposes. Related to the lute, the mandolin is a small stringed instrument constructed of wood. Its eight wire strings are tuned in pairs to the same notes as those of a violin. The processes used for salting cod are generally the same in most areas and time periods, with some local variations. The colonial New England cod fishery is typical. Cod was either "dry cured" or "green cured. "For a dry cure, fish were usually cleaned, split, salted, and then stored aboard ship after each haul so they would not deteriorate at sea. Once the the ship returned to shore, the fish would be repacked, resalted, and eventually sun dried into tough, durable slabs that could be stacked and stored like wood. Dry curing was used when fishers traveled long distances to fishing grounds. In contrast, green curing, in which the fish were cleaned, salted, and dried on land rather than at sea, was used on shorter trips to nearby fishing grounds.... Water transfer printing... is a surface decorating process with which elaborate graphics – such as wood grain, carbon fiber, camouflage, geometrical designs, etc. – are applied to a 3D [three-dimensional] product surface.... The process utilizes a water-soluble film that contains the printed patterns. The film dissolves in the water and leaves the ink on the surface. In the typical process, the item to be printed is first coated with a primer or an adhesion promoter. After this dries, a base coat paint is applied to control the hue of the pattern. For instance, wood grain prints often utilize a brown base coat, and many camouflage patterns use a neutral base. After the base coat is applied, the item is ready for decorating. The film is activated using a chemical activator. The item then is dipped into the water, and the ink wraps around it.
