Le quartier ouvrier érigé autour de l'usine E.B. Eddy, dans le secteur de Hull, demeure un témoin éloquent du passé industriel gatinois, notamment par le style architectural particulier de ses maisons allumettes, nommées ainsi en raison de leur façade étroite et pour rappeler la proximité de l'usine d'allumettes. De plus, souvent construites en bois vu l'abondance de ce matériau dans la région, ces modestes habitations ouvrières étaient hautement inflammables… comme l'allumette!

OBS

Les gens qui ont construit et habité ces demeures les appelaient plutôt les «maisons en bois Papillon» en raison de Georges Papillon. Cet individu avait été embauché par E. B. Eddy pour donner ou vendre à bas prix du bois aux ouvriers afin qu'ils puissent reconstruire rapidement après le Grand feu.

Les auteurs consultés ne s'entendent pas sur le nombre du terme «fondation»; le Grand dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse et le dictionnaire Logos le donnent catégoriquement au pluriel tandis que Le Robert et le Dictionnaire des difficultés de la langue française au Canada précisent qu'il est généralement au pluriel. Les exemples dans les ouvrages spécialisés sont aussi nombreux au singulier qu'au pluriel. Il en va de même pour «fondement».

Les Canadiens appellent souvent «solage» les fondements ou fondations d'une maison [...] Solage est un terme d'ancien français qui signifiait «terrain». Il a été usuel du XIIIe au XVIe siècle. À partir de l'idée de «terrain», les Français de l'Amérique du Nord lui ont prêté au début du XVIIIe siècle le sens de «ce qui d'une construction est fixé dans le sol» et on l'emploie depuis incorrectement au lieu de «fondations» ou «fondements».

Lightning grounds are designed to safely dissipate lightning strokes into the earth. They are part of a lightning protection system which usually consists of air terminals (lightning rods), down conductors, arresters and other connectors of fittings required for a complete system. A lightning protection system’s sole purpose is to protect a building, its occupants and contents from the thermal, mechanical and electrical effects of lightning.

Lightning is the visible discharge of static electricity within a cloud, between clouds, or between tile earth and a cloud.... A lightning protection system provides a means by which this discharge may enter or leave earth without passing through and damaging non-conducting parts of a structure, such as those made of wood, brick, tile of concrete. A lightning protection system does not prevent lightning from striking; it provides a means for controlling it and preventing damage by providing a low resistance path for the discharge of lightning energy.

For projects using brick, make certain you have a brick trowel, brick chisel, mason's hammer, 4 ft. level, tape measure, pointing trowel, jointing tool, mason's line, wood line blocks and spirit level. The height and thickness of your walls are always important... Be sure to leave a space between bricks for your joint. This method is best to determine the spacing of your bricks. Then, drive a stake in the ground at both ends of your wall and stretch mason's line between them. The line will serve as a straight line guide and should mark the outside edge and top of your first course of bricks. Later, as you proceed, the guideline can be moved up to match each successive course of bricks. Line blocks can be used to hold line in place... When laying bricks, always start at the corners and keep the corners higher than the rest of your work. Work from the corners toward the center of your wall. Use the level frequently to check level and plumb. As the wall increases in height, move the line blocks up to the ends of your corner lead.

Use plastic line blocks to attach line to corners and ends, which are always built up first. Lay bricks flush with line, but do not push it out. Line blocks, unlike pins and nails, leave no holes in mortar to be filled in later.
