Harps first appeared around 3000 B. C. [before Christ] in Mesopotamia and Iran. They were arched harps, probably developed from hunter's bows, and the body was made of one piece of wood. A thousand years, later, around 2000 B. C., a new type was conceived when two pieces of wood were joined at right angle, one drilled into the other. The result was the angular harp... Harp designers waited millennia before taking the next logical step : connecting the two extreme ends of the angular harp with a long rigid pillar. When they did,..., it became the frame harp(also known as the "pillar harp"), a more rigid structure that allows higher string tension and more strings.

This is a fire of first importance--a fundamental fire used in many other lays and an unexcelled fire in itself. No arrangement of wood will burn so effectively, for none admits so much air to every stick from all directions. And no other fire will burn down to a uniformly spread bed of coals in so short a time. First place the tinder--birch bark, fuzz-stick, etc.--on the ground and build a tiny wigwam fire above it not over six inches high. Now place four base poles, each two inches thick and a foot long, around it, the corners overlapping log-cabin style. Over this lower course, stack up finger-and-thumb-size sticks of hardwood in crisscross fashion bringing the structure up to ten or twelve inches in height.

There are actually 3 types of the crisscross fire, but they do not have a specific name. However, the term "log cabin fire" has been used as a synonym for all three. But the term properly designates another type of fire. It is actually the beginning of a crisscross fire that does not have the logs stacked in the crisscross fashion over the tiny wigwam fire, but rather has them stacked around the wigwam fire log cabin style.

Most musical instrument wood is dried to a 7% to 10% moisture content. However, the wood will forever allow moisture to pass into and out of its structure. Each variety of wood has what is called its equilibrium moisture content(EMC). This is the moisture level at which the wood is at rest naturally at a given atmospheric temperature and humidity. It is not constant. When the air is wetter, there will be moisture absorbed by the wood to a new wetter level, which is not the same amount as the moisture level in the air.

The Lunenburg Academy is the only intact Academy building surviving in Nova Scotia. Construction began on the building in 1894 and was haulted in 1895 when the company contracted to run the construction went bankrupt. Under the direction of Solomon Morash(whose home is another heritage building in Lunenburg), the construction was continued and the building was completed by late 1895. The building has an entirely wood structure and stands three stories tall. From its perch on top of Gallow's Hill the Academy can be seen from miles around and is claimed to be one of the most remarkable heritage buildings in the province. It has been designated as a Municipal, Provincial and Federal Heritage site.

They are part of a lightning protection system which usually consists of air terminals (lightning rods), down conductors, arresters and other connectors of fittings required for a complete system. A lightning protection system’s sole purpose is to protect a building, its occupants and contents from the thermal, mechanical and electrical effects of lightning.

Complex oxygen-containing organic substance that, with cellulose, forms the chief constituent of wood. It is the second only to cellulose as the most abundant organic material on Earth, though very little of it has found any application other than as a fuel. It is a mixture of complex, apparently polymeric compounds of poorly known structure.
