In December of 1994, the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean(TAO) Array was completed. The TAO Array is a series of about seventy buoys carefully placed in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Each buoy has special equipment that records information about the water and the air above the water. All of the buoys work together, forming an array, to give scientists a big picture of climate conditions in the area. The buoys send their data to scientists everyday by way of weather satellites that orbit Earth. Since 1994, scientists have been able to watch the water and the air for signs of El Niño. Once they notice that the water is getting warmer, they can keep track of the other changes and help to make predictions about the effects of El Niño better than they ever have before.

En janvier 1985, sous les auspices du CIUS, de l'OMM et de la Commission océanographique intergouvernementale (COI) de l'UNESCO, le Programme TOGA sur les océans tropicaux et l'atmosphère globale réunissant les représentants de 18 nations s'est lancé dans un projet décennal d'observations. Au cœur du projet figurait l'amarrage de quelque 70 bouées fixes constituant le Réseau océan-atmosphère pour l'observation dans les mers tropicales (TAO) - disséminées dans le Pacifique équatorial. Ces bouées envoient en permanence par satellite des relevés en temps réel concernant la température des eaux à la surface, la force des vents de surface et le taux de salinité aux centres de recherche qui les utilisent, pour élaborer des modèles climatiques aux fins des prévisions météorologiques. Ces données TAO sont complétées par le parachutage de bouées dérivantes non récupérables, les mesures altimétriques par radar du satellite franco-américain Topex/Poséidon et les relevés des températures des eaux de surface obtenus par satellite grâce à des capteurs thermosensibles à infrarouges.

A part of the International Space Station that Japan is responsible for is an experiment module named "Kibo, "or "hope" in Japanese... Kibo will consist of a Pressurized Module, an Exposed Facility, an Experiment Logistics Module-Pressurized Section, an Experiment Logistics Module-Exposed Section, and a Remote Manipulator System. The largest segment among these is the Pressurized Module, which will be a multipurpose laboratory of 11. 2 meters in length and 15. 9 tons in weight with a capacity to accommodate up to four crew members. The module will be equipped with ten experiment racks installed on walls, on which various experiments including material tests and life science experiments will be conducted. The air pressure in the module will be kept at one atmosphere, which is the same level as that on Earth, and the temperature and humidity will be also be controlled at a comfortable level to allow crew members to work in normal clothing.

It is being developed to satisfy various needs of researchers so that it can be used to conduct a variety of experiments. Moon Light Effects... Moon dogs are the paler version of sun dogs : bursts of light-often in reds and blues-that appear on both sides of the moon. Both phenomena are the work of almost invisible clouds that reside in the atmosphere where commercial airliners cruise, at about 30, 000 feet. The clouds are composed largely of ice crystals, known as diamond dust. The official name for a moon dog is a paraselene if seen at 22 degrees. If the image is at 90, 120 or 140 degrees then it's known as a parantiselene.

The Center for Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Studies(COLA), located in Calverton, Maryland, is a unique institution which allows earth scientists from several disciplines to work closely together on interdisciplinary research related to variability and predictability of Earth's climate on seasonal to decadal time scales. The scientific premise for research at COLA is that there is a predictable element of Earth's current climate that makes it possible to accurately forecast climate variations. While the chaotic nature of the global atmosphere is known to impose a limit on the predictability of the state of the climate at a given instant, the hypothesis behind COLA's research suggests that there is predictability in the midst of chaos, and that accurate climate forecasts with lead times longer than the inherent limit of deterministic predictability are possible.

Methane control. Explosions of methane in silos and shipholds is an ever present hazard. For the safe handling of coal, effective methane control is essential. In addition to the conventional defences of excluding potential sources of ignition or placing the coal in an inert atmosphere, CANMET has initiated work on the microbiological control of methane.

A contractor found that methane-oxidized bacteria, isolated from water samples taken from coal mines, remain active over an extended period of time and oxidize methane at an appreciable rate. This method may have applications for methane control in coal mines, coal-storage silos, and shipholds.

Le procédé T.I.G. fait appel à une électrode infusible (tungstène ou tungstène thorié), qui occupe l'axe d'une buse refroidie, délivrant le gaz de protection, qui peut être de l'argon, de l'hélium, ou, parfois, un mélange argon-hydrogène. Le métal d'apport est amené dans un bain de fusion au fur et à mesure de l'avancement de l'arc.
