Situational judgment tests include written or video-based assessments that present hypothetical scenarios intended to measure a specific construct. L'examen avec «volume ouvert» diminue la tension chez les élèves. De plus, il s'adapte à peu près à n'importe quelle situation de mesure du rendement scolaire, même dans le domaine des attitudes, Il favorise le recours à des tâches impliquant des processus mentaux complexes. Puisque l'étudiant dispose du volume. Le professeur se doit d'axer son questionnaire sur des aspects tels que la compréhension, l'application, l'analyse, la synthèse et l'évaluation. Par contre, cette formule risque de réduire les efforts d'étude chez les élèves. Ils négligent la mémorisation et la compréhension en se fiant trop sur le volume pour les dépanner.
