A Maritimes Breeding Bird Atlas was first suggested in 1970, and again in 1981, but did not come to fruition until 1984. Planning began that year and fieldwork was undertaken from 1986-1990. This huge effort involved 1, 120 people, who donated some 43, 000 hours in the field. The Atlas, a 270-page book edited by Dr. Tony Erskine and published in 1992, showed where each breeding species occurred. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is proud to sponsor this wonderful program aimed at keeping kids safe in the woods. Inspired in 1981 by the search for nine year old Jimmy Beveridge in southern California, this program was initiated by Ab Taylor to teach children how to survive in the woods if they ever become lost. The program focuses on the most basic and vital survival principles and although specifically designed for children between the ages of 7 and 11, it can be effective with slightly younger and older children as well. The Canada Council for the Arts announced today the winners of the 2004 Canada-Japan Literary Awards. The awards recognize literary excellence by Canadian authors writing on Japan, Japanese themes or themes that promote mutual understanding between Japan and Canada. The funds for these awards come from the investment return on that portion of the Japan-Canada Fund set aside as an endowment in perpetuity for a literary award. The amount of $20, 000 was available for this year to be shared equally between two laureates, one for English-language and one for French-language.
