Earth explorer missions such as Cryosat, the Gravity field and steady state Ocean Circulation Explorer(GOCE), the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity(SMOS) and the initiation of full implementation of the Atmospheric Dynamics Mission(ADM-Aeolus) are major achievements of the first phase of this programme. The second phase, EOEP-2, will give the Earth Science community and industry a stable outlook in which one new mission will be launched every year. In one of the larger and more Complex operations ever supported in the Arctic by the National Science Foundation(NSF), an ice breaker was frozen into the perennial pack ice and left to drift for a full year. From October, 1997 to October 1998, the ship served as a floating scientific research station, supporting the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean(SHEBA) project. The mission was to acquire data on the great canopy of pack ice, about the size of the United States, that covers the surface of the Arctic Ocean. After a year, the bags are transplanted to our ’Fattening Beds’. Fattening beds are closer to the ocean than catching beds.
