In August, 2007, the Settlement Workers in Schools(SWIS) program sponsored a pilot project to prepare newly arrived youth for entry to eight(8) high schools in Ontario. Called Newcomer Orientation Week or NOW, this intensive orientation initiative was piloted in six(6) high schools in Toronto, one(1) in Peel Region and one(1) in Hamilton. The NOW program was strategically positioned to occur just prior to the beginning of the school year. In NOW, former newcomer students are trained to lead the activities with the newly arrived students. The overall concept of NOW is that newcomer youth begin to feel more comfortable in the school setting and, if they run into difficulties, know how to get support-from PLs, teachers and/or SWIS workers. An Advisory Committee on Assistive Devices has been formed to provide the Minister of Industry, with advice on how to support the advancement of assistive technologies in Canada. The Committee's first meeting was held in Ottawa, October 31-November 1. This committee(ACAD) meets three times each year to provide input to the Minister of Industry on issues dealing with the assistive technology industry. It also provides input on the departmental planning process to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are taken into account. For example, it was on the recommendation of the ACAD that the Information Highways Applications Branch included accessibility as a criteria in the applications process for the Community Access Program. The International Military Sports Council, known by its acronym "CISM", is an international sports association composed of the armed forces of member nations accepted by the General Assembly. CISM is open to the armed forces of all nations. The aims of CISM are to develop friendly relations between the Armed Forces of member nations, promote physical education and sports activities, provide mutual technical assistance, support less privileged members in the name of friendship and solidarity, contribute towards the balanced and harmonious development of military personnel, and contribute to the international effort for universal peace. On May 1946, the Allied Forces Sports Council was set up, namely by Colonel Debrus and Major Mollet who were among the founding fathers of CISM two years later. Unfortunately, because of political discord, the Allied Forces Sports Council was extinguished in 1947. A Management, Resources and Results Structure provides a common, government-wide approach to the collection, management and public reporting of financial and non-financial information.
