In 2020, we are partnering with CANSSI Ontario, Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Canada, and the University of Toronto McLaughlin Centre to co-fund research related to data science, dystonia, and genomic medicine, respectively. Applications for these partnered awards go through the same review process as all other applications for the Discovery Award, and are scored and ranked with the others.

Liberation Day is celebrated each year on May 5 in the Netherlands to mark the end of the German occupation during the Second World War. The nation was liberated largely by Canadian troops. On May 5, 1945, the Canadian General Charles Foulkes and the German Commander-in-Chief Johannes Blaskowitz reached an oral agreement on the capitulation of Germany in Hotel De Wereld in Wageningen. One day later, the capitulation document was signed in the auditorium of the Agricultural University located next to the hotel. After the liberation in 1945 the decision was made that Liberation Day was going to be celebrated every 5 years. Only in 1990, the day was declared a national holiday, on which the liberation would be commemorated and celebrated annually.

The Cave Hill Campus is one of the three campuses of the University of the West Indies(U. W. I.). The U. W. I. is an independent institution, serving fourteen countries of the Commonwealth Caribbean. Unlike drugs, to which HIV can develop resistance by genetically reshaping its component parts, the engineered (smart bomb) virus attacks a feature that HIV probably cannot alter without rendering itself harmless. In laboratory experiments, it reduced HIV to undetectable levels, raising the possibility of an entirely new kind of therapy for treating AIDS and maybe other viral diseases.

The virus doesn’t seem to infect any cells other than those infected with HIV. The method consists of reprogramming a virus, changing its natural target so that it kills another virus. However, the therapy based on injection of live viruses is unlikely to be approved easily.

The HIV-hunting virus has been designed by Dr. John Rose and his colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine this year. They worked with a well-understood virus that infects cattle, known as VSV, or vesicular stomatitis virus and stripped out the gene that makes its protein coat. In its place, they inserted human genes for the two proteins that constitutes the T-cell lack. This created a novel virus, coated with T-cell lock proteins avid to find HIV keys, a sort of HIV in reverse. When added to culture of infected human T-cells, the redesigned viruses sought out and killed them.

The United Nations University(UNU) project on "Natural Disaster Risk Management" places natural disaster management within the context of sustainable development. During the year, work was carried out to finalize a theoretical framework for the analysis of social vulnerability and its inclusion into disaster management planning. This novel concept was tested in a pilot phase and presented to scientific audiences in workshops organized in China, Fiji and Germany. In the next phase, the project will begin applying the framework in several case studies. This work is intended to make an important contribution to the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction(IDNDR).

The BayNet initiative build on North Bay's solid telecommunications backbone..., to create what Sajatovic terms, a "wired city. That's everybody being able to communicate with each other, whether it's voice or data or video. "A public-and private-sector project, BayNet represents the efforts of about 15 people including the city corporation, Nippissing, Canadore, Northern Telecom, IBM Canada and Bell Canada. The BayNet team decided to use the Internet as its communications medium.

The International Program Directorate, which maintains an inventory of applicants from within and outside the federal public service, who have a university degree and at least five years of work experience and who have indicated an interest in international organizations on a regular basis. Interdepartmental selection committees decide which international positions are of interest to Canada and which candidates merit government support. Canadian candidates then compete with candidates from other nations and the final selection is made by the organizations concerned.
