In the past, it seems that burners were almost an afterthought in port design-furnace designers looked only at how to match burner and combustion air velocities. However it was during this decade that operators realized that they could reduce NO_x rates significantly by controlling the mixing rates of fuel and air. By delaying the mixing of fuel and air, operators then found that flame luminosity could be enhanced-thereby increasing efficiencies and reducing pollution. Soft, Lazy Flame. This condition appears only when just enough primary air is admitted to the burner to cause the yellow tips to disappear. The inner cone and the outer envelope will not be as clearly defined as they are in the correct, blue flame. This type of flame is best for high-low operation. It is not suitable, however, wherever there may be a shortage of secondary air.
