The mining dredges were land-locked floating machines, digging the ponds that allowed them to float - and thus move - across the area to be mined. The floating dredge most commonly operated in the North was the California-type, also known as bucket-line dredge. The Northern Research Institute, announced in 1989, opened at the Ayamdigut Campus of Yukon College in 1992, after several years of planning. Initially supported by assistance from the Donner Canada Foundation, the NRI's creation allowed Yukon College to formalize its institutional commitment to research.
