The portion of an avalanche path where a slide originates.

Generally starting zones are bare of trees, steeper than about 30° and receive large amounts of snow. Gullies and bowls are particularly efficient collectors of snow (especially on lee slopes where wind transport occurs) and the tops of these areas make up a large portion of the most active starting zones. Many starting zones are also bounded by cliffs or rock outcrops.

Avalanche paths are often sub-divided into three sections: the starting zone, the track and the runout zone.

OBS

"Release zone" is sometimes used as a synonym for "start zone". However, a "start zone" could have more than one "release zone." "Release zone" is a general term for avalanche occurrence. It is usually used in the context of triggering mechanism (e.g. natural release and release by explosives). If one wishes to speak of the area where an avalanche initiates, "start zone" is the preferred term.

accumulation zone : This term is sometimes used as a synonym for "start zone" because avalanches generally start in zones where snow tends to accumulate. However, if one wishes to speak of the area where an avalanche starts, "start zone" is preferable.

zone d'accumulation : En décrivant un site avalancheux, certains auteurs emploient le terme «zone d'accumulation» pour désigner la zone géographique où les avalanches se déclenchent. Toutefois, le terme désigne aussi une zone où la neige soufflée par le vent s'accumule, lors d'épisodes neigeux ou non. D'où la nécessité de toujours préciser la zone, «zone d'accumulation dans la zone de départ et dans la zone d'arrêt». Au sens de «zone où les avalanches se déclenchent», de préférence, utiliser les syntagmes «zone de départ» ou «zone de départ d'avalanche».

The avalanche ran through the monitored site entirely, affecting the ski run below for a track of 50 m where it stopped its run leaving a deposit consisting of round-shaped blocks behind.... through a survey after the event, a series of very detailed nivologic information were collected... In particular strata profiles in proximity to the release zone and in correspondence to the major deposits along the gliding zone and the accumulation zone were carried out. Along the whole avalanche site a series of transverse sections were considered. In correspondence to these, values of the snow cover height were checked and analyses of stratigraphy of the snow cover able to single out snow masses which had been drifted by wind and deposited by the progressing avalanche.
