The zero energy band thermostat allows space temperatures to float within the comfort zone without using energy for heating or cooling. Separate heating and cooling set-points and separate throttling range adjustments can be provided for virtually any type of heating, ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC) system.

Emplacement of the basaltic andesite caused secondary mobilization of the fusing tephra resulting in the distorted layering(flow-banding) observed in the fused tuff. The basaltic andesite also partly mixed with the rhyolitic liquid to produce a thin zone of dacite.

Ash behavior (fusion characteristics) with respect to clinkering tendency must be satisfactory for the type of firing equipment and furnace design used.

As the mixture [of raw materials] moves down the cylinder [of the rotary kiln], it progresses through four stages of transformation. Initially, any free water in the powder is lost by evaporation. Next, decomposition occurs from the loss of bound water and carbon dioxide. This is called calcination. The third stage is called clinkering. During this stage, the calcium silicates are formed. The final stage is the cooling stage.

The slurry is fed into huge rotary kilns fired with coal or natural gas. In the early stages of heating, the moisture is driven off. The dry powder then reaches the burning zone and partial fusion or clinkering occurs at a temperature of around 1, 500 degrees Celsius.

Basically, the gasification of solid fuels takes place at elevated temperatures. The heat required for the heating and conversion, is either provided through partial combustion(autothermic process) or through supply of external heat(allothermic process). Compared to the autothermic gasification, the allothermic gasification has the advantage that the fuel does not have to be partially burned in the gasification zone, in order to provide the necessary heat. In the allothermic gasification, the heat can be provided from any external sources, such as for instance high-temperature core reactors, but also from combustion chambers, wherein a fraction of the gas product is burned.

Allothermal gasification requires the supply of externally generated heat since the reaction of biological raw material with steam into combustible gas is altogether endothermal.

Advanced Gradient Heating Facility(AGHF)... The AGHF supports the production of advanced semiconductor materials and alloys using the directional solidification process, which depends on establishing a hot side and a cold side in the sample(a temperature gradient). It provides an extremely stable temperature environment of up to 1, 400°C, high-temperature gradients of up to 100°C/cm in the solidification zone, slow movement of the gradient across a sample to provide slow growth rates, efficient cooling through the use of a liquid metal cooling ring attached to the sample container, and Peltier pulse marking capability. The AGHF consists of three modules mounted in one side of a Spacelab double rack : the Core Facility Module contains the processing chamber with the furnace inside; the Electronics Module contains the controls and equipment necessary to operate the furnace; and the Gas Storage Module contains argon for chamber repressurization and sample cooling.

Characteristics : The soils are distinctly acidic. The humus in the soil is determined by the moistness of the mountain. The moister the mountain the more the humus. Where the soil water is close to the surface, there is more vegetation.... Plants are adapted to high radiation levels and low temperatures. During sunny weather the solar radiation is intense and may cause strong surface heating on the plants. It is a very fragile ecosystem whereby plants take a long time to grow because of the low temperatures and poor soils.... Another characteristic of the montane ecosystem is thin air. As one rises along the altitude, the air becomes less dense.... Montane ecosystems are high rainfall areas.... Low temperature as altitude increases is another characteristic of montane ecosystem.

Reactors. The most widely applied reactors for gasification of biomass are the moving bed types and the fluidized bed types.... Moving bed-counter current. The moving bed reactor is a vertical shaft through which the biomass flows slowly downwards as a packed bed. The reactor has a gastight feeding system at the top and an ash removal system at the bottom. The moving bed reactor is used for biomass having dimensions of 1 to 10 cm. Three sub-types can be distinguished : cocurrent, countercurrent and cross-current reactors. The countercurrent moving bed gasifier is the most simple reactor type. The gas, produced in the reduction zone, leaves the reactor together with the pyrolysis products and the steam from the drying zone. The producer gas is rich in hydrocarbons and it has a temperature of about 400°C. The gas can be used for direct heating purposes. If it is to be used for electricity generation by internal combustion engines, it has to be cleaned thoroughly.

Actuellement on fabrique surtout des aérothermes à soufflage horizontal; l'axe du jet d'air est situé à 3 ou 4 m de hauteur et sa portée peut atteindre 60 m avec des vitesses de soufflage de l'ordre de 15 m/s. L'utilisation des aérothermes avec de telles portées du jet d'air nécessite que ce jet ne rencontre aucun obstacle sur lequel il soit susceptible de se réfléchir, ce qui implique des locaux bien dégagés et hauts de plafond. Moyennant cette condition, on peut obtenir un chauffage régulier d'un local au moyen d'aérothermes en très petit nombre : les aérothermes à soufflage horizontal peuvent très bien avoir des puissances de plusieurs centaines de milliers de kilocalories. C'est un mode de chauffage convenant bien à des ateliers, garages, halls industriels suffisamment dégagés.
