The first type of precision airdrop is a single system called AGAS(Affordable Guided Airdrop System) that uses in-service round cargo parachutes. A detailed knowledge of the wind patterns at the drop location is used to calculate the required flight path and drop point. The flight path is maintained by the system's ability to pull slips which dump air from one side of the canopy. By incorporating wind data with this limited method of steering, the system has proven capable of landing an average of 48 meters away from the intended grid reference when deployed from 13 000 ft above ground level. This accuracy is phenomenal given that the present LF freefall cylinder rarely even hits a large drop zone when deployed from 5, 000 feet above ground evel(AGL). Cette précision n'est rien de moins que phénoménale en comparaison avec la faible précision de l'actuel système de largage de cylindre en chute libre, dont l'atterrissage se produit rarement à l'intérieur du périmètre d'une grande ZL, avec déploiement de la voilure à 5 000 pi (AGL). Le principe de la zone flottante en microgravité est relativement simple. Prenons par exemple un bâtonnet de beurre dont on fait fondre une des extrémités au moyen d'un briquet. Sur Terre, évidemment, le beurre se met à fondre et tombe goutte à goutte. En impesanteur cependant, le beurre fondu forme une sphère et demeure en suspension dans l'air. On appelle cette sphère une «zone flottante». Si l'on déplace le bâtonnet de beurre très lentement au-dessus de la flamme pour éventuellement le faire fondre au complet, la zone flottante initiale commence à se solidifier en s'éloignant de la source de chaleur. Zone melting. The term applied to a method of separation by fusion(and hence of purification) in which one, or a series, of molten zones traverses a bar or rod of metal. The molten zone as it progresses through the bar melts impure solid at the forward edge(the impure melt has a lower melting point than the pure metal) and leaves purer metal solidified behind the rear edge. A method used to detect and enumerate antibody producing cells. Cells obtained from, e. g. the spleen of an animal that has been immunized against sheep erythrocytes, are mixed into molten Agarose containing sheep erythrocytes. The agarose is poured into a Petri dish, allowed to set and then incubated at 37 ° C. Later, complement is poured into the dish, and any cells that have secreted antibody are revealed by the appearance of a zone of haemolysis round each of them. The agarose layer can be dried and stained so that the cells may be identified. The technique described reveals IgM secreting cells forming direct plaques. By the addition of an anti-IgG serum before the complement, indirect plaques due to IgG secreting cells can be revealed.
