"Sounds" of the Magnetosphere. Natural radio waves are associated with lightning, aurora and magnetospheric processes. Some of these radio waves occur at audio frequencies(about 100 Hz to 10 kHz). With this Major Crown Project the Department of National Defence proposes to equip one DDH class ship, the Annapolis, and the 12 Canadian Patrol Frigates(CPF) with the Canadian Towed Array Sonar System(CANTASS). CANTASS is a passive acoustic device used to detect and track submarine targets. It includes a shipboard electronic subsystem, an interface unit(Array Receiver), a handling and stowage group and a towed array group. An operational simulator and two repair and overhaul facilities have also been procured.
