Traditional methods for acquiring topographic data typically rely on aerial photogrammetry, where measurement of the terrain surface below forest canopy is difficult and error prone. The recent emergence of airborne P-band interferometric synthetic aperture radar(IFSAR), a high-resolution, microwave remote sensing technology, has the potential to provide significantly more accurate terrain models in forested areas. Low-frequency, P-band radar energy physically penetrates through the vegetation canopy and reflects from the underlying terrain surface, allowing for accurate measurement of the terrain surface elevation even in areas with dense forest cover.

Un radar à synthèse d'ouverture (SAR) est un radar imageur qui effectue un traitement des donnés reçues afin d'améliorer la résolution azimutale. Le traitement effectué permet d'affiner l'ouverture de l'antenne. On parle donc de synthèse d'ouverture. D'où le nom de ce type de système. Les radars à synthèse d'ouverture sont donc à opposer aux «radars à ouverture réelle» (RAR ou real aperture radar en anglais) pour lesquelles la résolution azimutale est simplement obtenue en utilisant une antenne d'émission/réception possédant un lobe d'antenne étroit dans la direction azimutale.

L'émergence récente des données interférométriques radar aéroporté à synthèse d'ouverture en bande P (IFSAR), une technologie de télédétection micro-onde à haute résolution, pourrait fournir des modèles d'altitude significativement plus précis dans les zones forestières. L'énergie à basse fréquence du radar en bande P pénètre physiquement à travers le couvert de végétation et est réfléchie par la surface sous-jacente du terrain permettant la mesure précise de l'altitude à la surface du terrain, même dans les zones de couvert forestier dense.

Imaging spectrometry ... is the field in remote sensing where sensors acquire image data in many, narrow and contiguous wavebands. The aim is to produce on a pixel by pixel basis radiance and reflectance data, which can be used to model physical properties of the Earth surface. This data forms an addition to subsurface geophysical data.

Imaging spectroscopy has many names in the remote sensing community, including imaging spectrometry, hyperspectral, and ultraspectral imaging. Spectroscopy is the study of electromagnetic radiation. Spectrometry is derived from spectro-photometry, the measure of photons as a function of wavelength, a term used for years in astronomy. However, spectrometry is becoming a term used to indicate the measurement of non-light quantities, such as in mass spectrometry(e. g. Ball, 1995). Hyper means excessive, but no imaging spectrometer in use can hardly be considered hyper-spectral, after all, a couple of hundred channels pales in comparison to truly high resolution spectrometer with millions of channels. Ultraspectral is beyond hyperspectral, a lofty goal that has not yet been reached.... Researchers at the USGS Spectroscopy Lab are studying and applying methods for identifying and mapping materials through spectroscopic remote sensing(called imaging spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, imaging spectrometry, ultraspectral imaging, etc), on the Earth and throughout the solar system using laboratory, airborne and spacecraft spectrometers.

The initiation of the EARSEC programme saw the development of sophisticated airborne SAR and electro-optical sensors, requiring equally sophisticated software to provide end-users with reliable products.
