Some Black Hawk models don’t need to land to refuel. They have an in-flight refueling probe. The probe allows the Black Hawks to refuel from a KC-130 tanker aircraft.

Pressure fueling is used on many late model aircraft. This fueling process... greatly reduces the time required to service large aircraft. There are also other advantages in the pressure fueling process. It eliminates aircraft skin damage and hazards to personnel and reduces the chances for fuel contamination. Pressure fueling also reduces the chance of static electricity igniting fuel vapors.

Aircraft refuelling and defuelling is controlled by a separate subsystem within the overall fuel system. The aircraft is fuelled by means of a refuelling receptacle that connects to the refuelling tanker. From the receptacle it enters a refuelling gallery which distributes the incoming fuel to the various aircraft tanks. The control of fuel entry into each tank is undertaken by valves that are under the control of the fuel management system.

A flexible tubing used in an aircraft plumbing system to allow relative movement between hose ends.

Because of the need for flexibility in many areas of aerospace vehicle construction, it is often necessary to employ hose instead of rigid tubing for the transmission of fluids and gases under pressure. Specifications for hose to be used in aerospace vehicle systems are given in the Air Force-Navy Aeronautical Design Standard(AND) 10340. This specification covers hoses for fuel, oil, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other systems. Hose and hose assemblies for aircraft plumbing systems are manufactured in four different pressure categories : low-pressure, with a maximum operating pressure of 300 psi [2068 kPa] ;medium-pressure(300 to 1500 psi) [2068 to 10 342 kPa] ;high pressure(1500 to 3000 psi) [10 342 to 20 685 kPa] ;and extra-high-pressure(3000 to 6000 psi) [20 865 to 41 370 kPa]. It must be noted that the pressure ranges given above are general and that variations will be encountered in specific systems and installations. Hose assemblies are usually pressure-tested at a pressure at least twice the maximum operating pressure. The burst pressure is usually required to be at least four times the maximum operating pressure. Thus a good margin of safety is provided.

A turbofan is a type of aircraft engine consisting of a ducted fan which is powered by a gas turbine. Part of the airstream from the ducted fan passes through the gas turbine core, providing oxygen to burn fuel to create power. This system is utilized in some general aviation aircraft but is more prevalent in commercial aircraft. The cavity is sealed with urethane or polysulfide sealant to hold the fuel in the cavity. Bladders(or fuel cells) have been the staple way to store fuel in general aviation aircraft. Normal fuelling is accomplished through dual fuel nozzle adapters located on the right wing leading edge spar at the fuelling stations. All fuelling operations, except fuel pump control, are accomplished at the fuelling station. Opening the station access door applies DC power to the fuelling system and removes the N3 inhibit to the centre tank fuel pumps. Fuel flows through the dual nozzles to pressurise a fuelling manifold. Fuelling valves control the flow of fuel from the fuelling manifold into each of the three switches on the fuelling panel. A fuel quantity may be preselected for each tank. The fuelling valves close automatically when the preselected quantity is reached or when the tank is full, whichever occurs first. A tank overfill system is provided to prevent fuel spillage. If any fuel is sensed in the surge tanks during fuelling, a signal is sent to close all fuelling valves. The aircraft is filled automatically by hydrant or tank truck pressure. All tanks may be fuelled at the same time. The main tanks may also be fuelled manually through over wing fill ports. There are no over wing fill ports for the centre tank.

Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified.

The accumulator is intended for heating fuel components in the rocket and space engines and can be used in space engineering, aircraft and other branches of industry. The task of increasing gas heating efficiency, reducing mass of the construction, diminution of dimensions and lowering thermal and hydraulic losses of heated gas is solved by making a heat accumulating element as a mono-unit in the form of cylinder. Agencies working for NASA use this term for a lighter-than-air aircraft designed to explore the planets. An aerobot is a helium-filled balloon fitted with heaters that are powered by solar cells. During the day, solar energy will heat the helium and give it extra buoyancy; at night, the balloon will drop to lower altitudes or even touch the ground. A limitation of the design is that its movements cannot be fully controlled, though it may have some ability to dictate its altitude, perhaps through dropping ballast, releasing gas or managing its temperature. A big advantage of this design is that it doesn’t need fuel, which is expensive to transport and which runs out all too soon. Unlike satellites, aerobots fly in the atmosphere, so allowing experiments to be carried out on its chemistry. They can also view and record the ground from much lower altitudes than is possible with satellites. NASA plans to send a device of this sort to Mars in 2003, and possibly later to Titan, Venus and Jupiter.
