A Lancaster crew numbered seven : the pilot, flight engineer, navigator, wireless operator, bomb aimer, mid-upper gunner, and rear gunner.... The mid-upper gunner and rear-gunner were responsible for the defence of the aircraft. Separated from the rest of the crew, they remained cramped at their machine gun posts for the entire flight.
