The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off.

Cette orientation sera prise pour référence horizontale. En choisissant le nord magnétique comme référence, cet appareil indiquera le cap magnétique de l'avion. Il faudra le «caler» avant chaque vol lorsque l'avion est aligné sur la piste (piste dont on connaît l'orientation).

Le conservateur de cap, ou gyroscope directionnel, est l'un des trois instruments à gyroscope. Aligné avec le compas, il donne une indication précise et stable concernant le cap magnétique de l'appareil. Le conservateur de cap constitue une aide importante car le compas est sujet à des erreurs causées par l'accélération, la décélération et la courbure du champ magnétique terrestre, particulièrement sous les hautes latitudes. Il arrive fréquemment que le compas oscille; il est particulièrement difficile à lire dans les turbulences ou pendant les manœuvres. Fonctionnement. Le gyroscope du conservateur de cap pivote dans un plan vertical. Une carte comportant des caps maintient son orientation lorsque l'avion tourne. Le mouvement apparent de la carte donne au pilote une indication précise et instantanée du cap de l'avion et de la direction dans laquelle il tourne. La carte est marquée de 5 degrés en 5 degrés, avec une indication chiffrée tous les 30 degrés et les points cardinaux repérés par N, S, E, O.

A dual cycle fan jet engine suitable for use in STOL [Short Takeoff and Landing Aircraft] aircraft with augmentor wings is disclosed. In a cruise mode of operation, primary air and fan air from a fan jet engine are axially exhausted rearwardly in a conventional manner. In an augmentor mode of operation, the primary air is diverted by valves through an augmentor turbine where it is expanded and exhausted at a relatively low velocity, and the fan air is diverted by valves through an augmentor compressor driven by the augmentor turbine. The supercharged output of the augmentor compressor is directed via wing ducting to the augmentor flaps of the associated augmentor wing.

The use of an augmenter wing as a lift enhancement device has been the subject of extensive research. In blown wing or other aircraft the augmenter wing would be disposed aft and above the aircraft’s main wing to utilize otherwise "lost" airflow.

The Fowler flap and others with similar operation are designed to increase substantially the wing area as the flap is extended. When retracted, the flap forms the trailing edge of the wing. As this type of flap is extended, it is moved rearward, often by means of a worm gear, and is supported in the correct position by means of curved tracks. The effect of the Fowler flap, when extended, is to greatly reduce the stalling speed of the aircraft by the increase in wing area and change in wing camber.

The majority of modern aircraft, primarily the large transport type, are equipped with certain systems which are not necessary for the actual operation and flight of the airplane but which are needed for the comfort and convenience of the crew and passengers and are required by Federal Aviation Regulations(FAR). Some of these systems are important for the safe operation of the aircraft under a variety of conditions, and some are designed to provide for emergencies. Systems not essential to the actual operation of the aircraft are commonly called auxiliary systems. Among such systems are air-conditioning, deicing and anti-icing, fire-warning and-extinguishing, oxygen, and water and waste systems. All these systems are needed for the safety and comfort of crew and passengers on high-altitude, long-range airplanes; hence it is important the technician have a good understanding of their operation and maintenance.

The main entrance door is the primary means of aircraft access for passengers and crew. It consists of a door structure and an attached folding stairway with hand rails. The door and stairway must be unlocked and pushed out to initiate a controlled free-fall to the extended position. During closing, the stairway is unlocked and the door is retracted upward and inward by hydraulic pressure from the Auxiliary(AUX) hydraulic system. The door and stair operation accommodates any combination of landing gear strut and tire inflation. Its use requires no ground support equipment.
