The part of a compass on which the direction graduations are placed, it is usually in the form of a thin disk or annulus graduated in degrees, clockwise from 0° at the reference direction to 360°, and sometimes also in compass points.

The heading indicator(also known as the directional gyro) is an instrument designed to indicate the heading of the airplane... The gyro wheel in the heading indicator is mounted vertically and spins about its horizontal axis... The spinning gyro wheel is mounted in an inner gimbal ring that is free to turn about the horizontal axis. The inner ring is, in turn, mounted inside an outer gimbal ring. The compass rose card on the face of the instrument is attached by a series of gears to the outer gimbal ring. As the airplane turns, the compass card rotates indicating a turn to the left or right.

The software can simulate nearly any commercial transport aircraft, using five networked graphics computer machines, including an out-the-window display. Les instruments de bord ont comme rôle de conforter le pilote dans sa façon de tenir son avion, et cela non seulement car le pilote peut involontairement changer son attitude de vol, donc l'assiette de l'avion, et ne pas s'en apercevoir assez tôt, mais aussi car le pilote peut perdre les références visuelles naturelles qui sont celles du vol VFR, et ainsi très facilement se désorienter.

Selon les dictionnaires courants usuels, le terme «assiette» semble réservé au domaine de l'aéronautique et fait allusion à la «position du trièdre d'un avion par rapport au trièdre de référence terrestre» (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse); le terme «attitude» est synonyme d'«orientation» et est réservé aux domaines de l'aérospatiale et de l'astronautique pour désigner la «direction des axes d'un engin spatial par rapport à un trièdre de référence (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse). Dans la pratique, «assiette» et «attitude» sont cependant largement utilisés - abusivement diront certains - sur le même plan dans le domaine de l'aéronautique en parlant d'un avion ou d'un aéronef.

L'un d'eux, l'indicateur de virage (plus communément appelé «l'aiguille») est un gyromètre qui mesure le taux de virage autour de l'axe vertical. L'autre, l'indicateur de glissade (généralement appelé «la bille») est un simple système pendulaire qui sert principalement à indiquer si le virage est coordonné (c'est-à-dire si l'angle d'inclinaison correspond à la vitesse vraie et au taux de virage), et sinon à indiquer l'amplitude de la glissade ou du dérapage.

Certains parlent d'indicateur de virage tout court puisque celui-ci est forcément jumelé à un niveau transversal. En traduction, mieux vaut ne pas trop sous-entendre, car il pourrait très bien arriver des situations où l'instrument et un de ses éléments constitutifs portent le même nom («l'indicateur de virage comprend l'indicateur de virage proprement dit et un niveau transversal [...]»).

V-bar : Flight Director Indicator... The V-bar command indicator is a pair of yellow, wedge-shaped V-bars that move up or down to command a climb or descent, and roll left or right to command a bank. The flight director system commands the V-bars to capture and track the selected heading or radio signals; or to maintain a desired pitch angle, glidepath, or an optimum speed during SC(speed command) operation. To satisfy the commands, the aircraft is maneuvered so that the airplane symbol is flown into the V-bars until the two are aligned. Input signals to the V-bars depend upon the mode of operation. The V-bars are biased from view by the instrument failure warning system; when loss of signal occurs, or sensing circuits fail that are associated with the selected mode of operation. They are also out of view when the mode selector control is in the OFF position.

The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument's little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane.

The attitude indicator and heading indicator are based on a gyro’s rigidity in space. Because a gyro resists being tipped over, it can provide a stable reference to the real horizon or to a specific direction.

Le gyroscope de l'indicateur de virage est généralement fixé selon un angle de 30 degrés. Lorsque l'avion vire, la force centrifuge entraîne la précession du gyroscope. L'importance de la précession fait s'incliner vers la gauche ou vers la droite un avion miniature situé sur le cadran de l'instrument. Plus le virage est rapide, plus la précession est forte, d'où une inclinaison plus importante de l'avion miniature.

The overspeed warning system consists of a maximum airspeed sensor, warning lights, warning horn, and associated wiring. The sensor, located in the right console, senses maximum airspeed from the airplane pitot and static system and causes the overspeed warning lights on the instrument panels to light and the warning horn located in the left console to sound.
