Slow flight is... the name given to a training maneuver where a pilot(often accompanied by a flight instructor) flies to a safe altitude and then deliberately slows the airplane to a speed just above its stall speed. This maneuver is valuable in that it teaches the pilot to maintain control of the aircraft in adverse conditions; it requires coordination between hands and feet in order to maintain coordinated flight; and it reminds the pilot of the signs and symptoms of a stall, attuning the pilot to recognize them should they occur in an emergency.

The tendency of a rotating body, when a force is applied perpendicular to its plane of rotation, to turn in the direction of its rotation 90 degrees to its axis and take up a new plane of rotation parallel to the applied force.

Gyroscopic precession ... When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments. Its principle effect is on the heading indicator, which tends to drift over time.

A gyroscope will not only resist being moved out of its vertical position, it will also generate force as it attempts to travel in large, circular patterns. These patterns are most easily seen with a spinning top. As the top begins losing its energy, it never simply spirals straight down in the same direction that it was originally spinning. As it destabilizes, it will always begin slowly rotating or precessing in a slow, even circle that is in the opposite direction to its normal spinning motion. These circular patterns are known as "precessional" motions, and they are another aspect of a gyroscope’s movement that will occur either in air or in a vacuum and can be used to overcome gravity.

If an airplane changes suddenly from a nose up to a nose down position, as is the case during the take-off roll in a tail wheel airplane, the airplane will yaw sharply to the left as the pilot shoves the wheel forward to raise the tail. The application of right rudder compensates for the precession tendency.

A fixed trim tab is one that can be adjusted on the ground but cannot be adjusted in flight. This type of tab is usually a sheet-metal plate attached to the rear of the control surface and extending to the rear of the trailing edge. If the pilot reports that the airplane will not fly straight and level at cruising speed, the appropriate tab is adjusted on the ground by bending a rudder tab to the right or left, and bending the aileron and elevator tabs up or down, depending upon the correction required.

By extending the flaps, the pilot is increasing the camber of the wing, the size of the wing and the wing's angle of attack. Le carnet de bord est à peu près semblable au carnet de route en ce qui a trait à son utilisation. Cette pièce doit être signée après chaque vol par le commandant de bord et par le responsable de l'entretien. Dans le cas d'Air Canada, la composition de l'équipage et le nombre de passagers n'y figurent pas. On y trouve, au recto, les renseignements suivants : - remarques sur le déroulement de l'approche en automatique; - numéro du vol et date; - données relatives au vol (branches et temps); - diverses observations mécaniques; - incidents survenus en cours de vol; au verso : réparations à entreprendre à l'escale; - travail effectué par l'équipe d'entretien et signature du responsable.

Control-line model airplanes are flown in a circle, attached to a handle by a set of lines. The pilot can control the flight of the model by manipulating the handle. Flying model airplanes on lines has a long and illustrious history. The earliest attempts at "control-line" used one line attached to a long pole. The pilot would cause the airplane to climb or dive by "leading" it with the pole. The person usually credited with inventing the now widely used two line system is Jim Walker, who came up with the idea sometime in the 30s or 40s. The two line system(often referred to a "U-Control", and used on perhaps 99% of control line models) uses a triangular bellcrank to transfer the movement of the wires to the pushrod, connected to the elevator and/or flap control horns. Some Speed flyers use "monoline", which is a system that utilizes line twisting for control.

Selon les dictionnaires courants usuels, le terme «assiette» semble réservé au domaine de l'aéronautique et fait allusion à la «position du trièdre d'un avion par rapport au trièdre de référence terrestre» (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse); le terme «attitude» est synonyme d'«orientation» et est réservé aux domaines de l'aérospatiale et de l'astronautique pour désigner la «direction des axes d'un engin spatial par rapport à un trièdre de référence (Dictionnaire encyclopédique Larousse). Dans la pratique, «assiette» et «attitude» sont cependant largement utilisés - abusivement diront certains - sur le même plan dans le domaine de l'aéronautique en parlant d'un avion ou d'un aéronef.

L'horizon artificiel [...] est essentiellement constitué par un gyroscope tournant à vitesse élevée dont la principale caractéristique est la fixité dans l'espace. Il reste fixe tandis que le boîtier solidaire du tableau de bord se déplace avec l'avion. [...] La maquette qui représente l'avion (ailes et cône d'hélice) est solidaire du tableau de bord. Elle se déplace devant un tambour sur lequel figure une représentation de l'horizon naturel, de la terre (en noir) et du ciel (en bleu). Ce tambour gradué en degré permet de déterminer l'assiette. La couronne supérieure porte, de part et d'autre du repère origine, trois repères principaux à 30, 60 et 90° permettant de mesurer l'inclinaison.

Le gyroscope de l'indicateur de virage est généralement fixé selon un angle de 30 degrés. Lorsque l'avion vire, la force centrifuge entraîne la précession du gyroscope. L'importance de la précession fait s'incliner vers la gauche ou vers la droite un avion miniature situé sur le cadran de l'instrument. Plus le virage est rapide, plus la précession est forte, d'où une inclinaison plus importante de l'avion miniature.

Lorsqu'on lève le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé [de l'horizon artificiel] monte au-dessus de la barre d'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez haut. Lorsqu'on baisse le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé cale sous l'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez bas. Lorsque l'avion s'incline, l'avion stylisé s'incline par rapport à la barre d'horizon et l'aiguille indique le nombre de degrés d'inclinaison sur l'échelle graduée. [...] Lorsqu'il est verrouillé, le gyroscope est immobilisé de telle façon que l'avion-symbole affiche le vol en palier.
