L'identification des aéroports représente souvent un problème pour les pilotes peu expérimentés, en particulier lorsqu'ils sont très rapprochés les uns des autres. Il arrive que les pilotes de ligne expérimentés atterrissent par erreur à un aéroport qui n'est pas l'aéroport prévu et se trouvent dans une situation embarrassante. Ordinairement un aérodrome peut être reconnu aisément par l'ensemble de ses installations.
