A series of mountain ranges that stretches from the eastern to the northeastern part of the continent of North America. Forming the eastern complement of the Rocky Mountains, the Appalachian Mountains extend for about 2, 400 km from the Central Alabama region in the United States to the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

One of the toponyms of pan-Canadian significance with an officially approved form in both official languages. ... the UAB [University of Alabama at Birmingham] team probed deeper into the welding process and made a fundamental metallurgical discovery-constitutional liquid film migration-a phenomenon that Dr. Thompson says would not have been found without the Gleeble. In the 1980's, researchers working in solid state electronic devices discovered diffusion-induced grain boundary migration, in which diffusion of elements from the top layer of a device would cause the grain boundaries to move in unpredictable directions. Five years later, other investigators found that running a liquid along the grain boundary could also cause it to move. Then, in the course of their NASA-related research, Dr. Thompson and his colleagues discovered that liquid film migration of grain boundaries occurred naturally during welding as the result of precipitates liquating in the heat affected zone. The UAB team further found that the migration distance was an order of magnitude greater than previously observed and that new grains were actually formed during the process. Spurred on by this discovery, the UAB researchers looked at real-world welding processes and found that constitutional liquid film migration could be found there too.

The Treaty of Washington was a treaty concluded in 1871 between Britain and the United States for setting various differences between the two governments, but chiefly those with regard to the Alabama claims. In the beginning of 1871 the British government sent Sir John Rose to the United States to ascertain whether negociations looking towards the settlement of the question in dispute would be acceptable to the President. The United States government received his advances with cordiality and on the 26th of January Sir Edward Thornton, the British Minister at Washington, formally proposed the appointment of a joint high commission to meet at Washington for the purpose of devising means for setting the matters at issue. The United States readily consented to the proposal, provided the differences growing out of the Civil War should be included among the subjects to be considered. The British government promptly accepted the American proviso and the President appointed commissioners.

Pull down trips require the group to enter a cave with one or two ropes and rig each drop so that once everyone has reached the bottom, one end of the rope can be pulled and send all the rope falling down to the bottom of the pit. The only concern with this practice is that there is no room for error: you enter the cave at the top of the mountain and proceed until you reach the lower entrance/exit.
