The night tracker is a passive device that receives heat emissions(infrared energy) from a target area... and converts the infrared energy to electrical signals and then to visible light. It displays the visible light as a real-time scene for viewing by the gunner. Objects that are warmer than the ambient temperature appear in the night tracker as varying shades of red; objects cooler than ambient temperature appear in the nightsight as black. The night tracker is a larger and heavier tracker than the day tracker, but performs the same functions. Twisted nematic : Cigar-like organic molecules form long helical chains when those along one face of the panel are oriented in one direction and those along the other face are oriented at right angles. A polarizing plate allows only ambient light polarized in one direction to pass through. This light is twisted 90 degrees by the helices. A second polarizer on the opposite face, polarized in the same direction as the first one, will block the light, creating a dark display. An applied voltage untwists the helix at a crosspoint, allowing light through and making a bright spot. A plate polarized at right angles will produce a bright display that goes dark at points where voltage is applied. Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... A measure of the cleanliness of air is the atmospheric visibility. That visibility is generally degraded by atmospheric aerosols. The nephelometer is a device which measures the light scattering capability of the atmosphere and thus provides a measure of visibility. The light source in an integrating nephelometer provides excitation for particulates which scatter light into a cone between 10 and 170 degrees of the optic axis. The scattered light is detected with a photomultiplier.
