The second stage in the process of phtosynthesis is called the Calvin Cycle (it is also called the Calvin-Benson Cycle or the Carbon Fixation Cycle). In the Calvin Cycle, carbon molecules from carbon dioxide, CO2, are fixed into the sugar glucose, (C6H12O2) (in six repeats of the cycle). The Calvin Cycle takes place in the stroma of eucaryotic chloroplasts. The major enzyme that mediates the Calvin Cycle is Rubisco (ribulose-1-5-biphosphate carboxylase). The Calvin Cycle was first investigated in the late 1940s and early 1950s by the Nobel Prize winning chemist Melvin Calvin (1911-1997).

All photosynthetic plants take carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it, through a complicated sequence of chemical reactions, into starches and sugars. In C3 plants all the cells in the mesophyll of a leaf conduct photosynthesis by the same process, a sequence of reactions called the Calvin cycle. Early in the cycle, atmospheric carbon dioxide is incorporated, or fixed, into a compound containing three carbon atoms.

Calvin-Benson Cycle (C3 cycle). So named because some of the important molecules in the cycle have 3 carbons in them. Requires CO2 (normally from air); a sugar to capture the CO2 (ribulose biphosphate, RuBP); catalytic enzymes and energy as ATP & NADPH (obtained from light-dependent reactions).

ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) is an imaging instrument that is flying on Terra, a satellite launched in December 1999 as part of NASA's Earth Observing System(EOS). ASTER is a cooperative effort between NASA and Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry(METI) and the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center(ERSDAC). ASTER will be used to obtain detailed maps of land surface temperature, emissivity, reflectance and elevation. The EOS platforms are part of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, whose goal is to obtain a better understanding of the interactions between the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and atmosphere.

The Space Acceleration Measurement System-II [SAMS-II] provides an acceleration measurement system serving the needs of microgravity science experiments on ISS [International Space Station]. It provides data supporting experiments that are affected by local accelerations and contributes to the characterization of the ISS environment. The system consists of a control unit(providing control, data recording, analysis and downlink), remote triaxial sensors(measuring experiment-specific locations chosen by the users), and ground operations equipment(serving as the gateway enabling investigators to command and control measurements). Operations are coordinated at the Lewis Telescience Support Center; experiment-specific operating parameters are controlled by science users.

The Next Generation Weather Radar system(NEXRAD) comprises approximately 160 Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler(WSR-88D) sites throughout the United States and selected overseas locations. This system is a joint effort of the United States Departments of Commerce(DOC), Defense(DOD), and Transportation(DOT). The controlling agencies are the National Weather Service(NWS), Air Weather Service(AWS) and Federal Aviation Administration(FAA), respectively. Level II data are the three meteorological base data quantities : reflectivity, mean radial velocity, and spectrum width. From these quantities, computer processing generates numerous meteorological analysis products known as Level III data. Level II data are recorded at all NWS and most AWS and FAA WSR-88D sites. Level III products are recorded at the 120 NWS sites. The data are sent to the National Climatic Data Center(NCDC) for archiving and dissemination.

The NIST Center for Computing and Applied Mathematics(CCAM), working under sponsorship of the AMRF, has developed AutoMan, a software package which allows investors to include non-financial and even non-quantitative criteria in their analysis.... AutoMan uses four steps to measure the impact of potential investments : define the decision model by identifying impact criteria; establish weights for the categories and for the criteria through pairwise comparisons; rate investment alternatives with respect to each criterion; and compute a weighted average rating for each investment alternative.
