La spectrométrie de masse à temps de vol est une technologie dans laquelle les molécules ionisées sont accélérées par un champ électrique ayant une valeur connue. Grâce à cette accélération, les ions de même charge électrique acquièrent la même énergie cinétique. La vitesse des ions par contre dépend du rapport masse/charge (m/z). La valeur exacte de ce rapport est mesurée par le temps que met la molécule ionisée à atteindre un détecteur situé à une distance connue. Les particules les plus petites sont accélérées aux vitesses les plus élevées et mettent moins de temps pour atteindre le détecteur.
