Two different methods of operating have led to modifications in gear resulting in two types of long lines : drift and set lines. As opposed to drifting, a piece of fishing gear is considered set when it is anchored or attached to the bottom or shore so that it is not free to move about with water or wind currents. A long box-shaped net that extends to the shoreline and is used to catch cod.

The cod trap is basically a room, with four walls and a floor, constructed of netting. Fish enter the trap through a doorway in the front wall. Extending outward from the centre of the doorway is a long wall of netting which, because of its function of leading fish into the trap, came to be called the leader. The trap is kept upright in the water by floats placed along the top of the walls, and lead weights at the bottom. It is held on location by a system of corner ropes anchored to the sea bottom.

Proteins are mixed into a solution that makes them grow - the precipitant solution - and squeezed onto the tip of a syringe. In deep water an open caisson is sometimes sunk by the sand-island method. A cofferdam is constructed and filled with sand to form an artificial island. The island serves as a working platform and guide for sinking the caisson.

... a ring of sheet piles may be driven to form an enclosure in which an island of sand is constructed. The caisson is then started on the sand and sunk through it as if the ground surface were above water table.

A huge rubberized bag is floated into position and filled with dredged sand until it is anchored in position on the ocean floor. Surrounding water pressure compresses the sand so the bag stands upright. Prefabricated floating units are then placed on top of the bag to form the surface island.
